The Science Of Naturopathy
Naturopathy is a scientific system of Natural Healing which diagnoses,
treats and cares for patients with any dis-ease, pain, injury or deformity
using systems of practice that base treatment of physiological functions and
abnormal conditions on natural laws governing the human body. This includes
any physical, chemical or mental condition. A Naturopath utilizes spiritual,
psychological, physiological and mechanical methods such as air, water,
light, heat, earth, phototherapy, food and herb therapy,
psychotherapy, minor and orificial surgery, mechanotherapy, naturopathic
corrections and manipulations, preventive and natural methods or modalities,
natural medicines, homeopathy, natural processed foods, herbs, and nature's
remedies. This excludes major surgery, therapeutic use of x-ray and radium,
use of injections, serums and all drugs. The exception is those assimilable
substances which contain life and health elements or compounds which are
components of body tissues and are physiologically compatible with the body
processes for maintenance of life.
The Philosophy & Practice Of Naturopathy
The scope of practice and methods employed vary among Naturopathic
Physicians. Naturopathic Medicine incorporates all healing methods which are
compatible with its philosophy, that the human body possesses enormous power
to heal itself through mechanisms of homeostasis - restoring balance in the
structure and function (body, mind, spirit) and adapting to environmental
changes. This vital force, the "vis medicatrix naturae", is the foundation
of Naturopathic philosophy and practice. The practice of Naturopathy does
not depend upon a single method of treatment to reach all dis-eases, but
combines in one eclectic well-ordered system of therapeutics, the best of
all forms of natural healing. It therefore treats each case (of pathology,
dis-ease or illness) by the best method or combination of methods suited to
each individual's needs. Thus, a Naturopathic practice is characterized by
an individuality and freedom to explore old and new methods of evaluation,
prevention and treatment.
The distinctive feature of a Naturopathic practice is to facilitate healing
and teach natural living principles. The Naturopathic Physician emphasizes
the patient's responsibility toward his or her own health and well-being.
Naturopathy has its own proven, well-founded theories which explain the true
cause of dis-ease. Its philosophy of health is wholly in conformity with
Nature's Laws of Life. Naturopathy is also an art, not only because its
healing is applicable to all forms of dis-ease, but because the
highest degree of skill is required to administer its many forms of
treatment.
The Naturopathic Doctorate Program
There are eleven states in the United States which have legislated licensure for Naturopathic Physicians. The majority of the other states and most countries have no laws governing its practice and it is generally acceptable to practice within naturopathic guidelines. Specific questions about the legal status and/or licensure requirements for practice in a particular state or country should be directed to the appropriate government agencies or associations.
Program of Study - Phase I
Phase I of the Naturopathic program will be independent study, practical training, research, case studies and clinical
training.
Program of Study - Phase II
Phase II of the Naturopathic program includes specialized learning in clinical settings near to the student’s residence if possible and desired, or in conjunction with our national and international network of affiliate clinics and training facilities.
